Flyers No Longer Turkeys

This Friday, Pauly shook off his post-turkey food coma long enough to take his ten year old nephew to the Flyers game versus Carolina. Arriving early, we staked out a spot right next to the Flyers tunnel so my nephew could get a good luck at his hero, Simon Gagne, and the rest of the retro-orange-jersey clad team at the pre-game skate. We were able to get a nice close-up view of a team obviously on a five game winning streak. They were loose, energetic, and the smiles on their faces were almost as big as my nephew’s after he got a high-five from Simon on the way back into the locker room. I told him never to wash that hand again, just like his uncle didn’t after shaking hands with Bernie Parent in ’75.

After a nice start, the team and the crowd both deflated in a hurry. I’ve long bemoaned the church-like atmosphere in the Wac Center, and this day was among the quietest I’ve ever experienced. Hey guys, the team just won five in a row. How about getting lifting your sweet potatoes out of your seat and offering up a cheer now and then? Not that that’s an excuse, but the Fly-boys seemed fairly unenergetic as the game wore on. Although they salvaged a point, they started to exhibit some of those bad habits from earlier in the season. I love Scotty Hartnell’s attitude, but he barely moved his feet in this game and missed several passes. And Marty’s looked great in the recent stretch, but jeez he can’t handle the puck. Please, please stay between the pipes Marty!

All in all, Flyers did a great job in November climbing back into contention. Let's hope they don't blow it by sliding back into sloppy habits. If that unfolds, count on more fan apathy and no retro-jersey under the Christmas tree for Pauly or his nephews.

Eagles Thankgiving Redemption

So Thanksgiving has come and gone. I had my fair share of turkey and hapless football thanks to the pitiful Lions/Titans and Dallas/Seattle games. I was expecting another dud as I headed down to the Linc late yesterday afternoon. What else was I to expect? Wasn't like the Eagles were lighting it on fire the past few games and all of us who bleed green know all too well. So after getting fleeced for parking and having a few brews in the parking lot, I took what was left of my Eagles fan dignity and went in to see if my team could shut down the high flying Cardinals lead by

Eagles Shame, Part II

Where to begin? The Eagles have another game down and down big. Mistakes galore, poor decisions everywhere yet down only 10-7 when Andy Reid decides to pull Donovan. Now granted, Donovan stunk up the place but the game was so close, why pull the one guy on the team that can run this disfunctional offense? Did Andy really think Kevin Kolb, who did his best under an adverse situation, would do better? I think it has come high-time for Andy to resign

Eagles Shame

So it has taken me a few days to recover from the collosal embarrassment called the Eagles-Bengals game. I think I may have finally watched the last game for the 2008 season. This team is an outright embarrassment to watch and as a season-ticket holder, I duly request a refund. To go up against a 1-8 team that can hardly move the ball and end in a tie is such a disgrace that heads need to roll in this organization. Let me start where I think it should start:

Phillies and Free Agency - The Dilemma

So the World Series is won and this town is starting to wind down. We have our new GM and the day of full access to free agents is less than a week away. I've talked in the past of the need to sign both Jamie Moyer and Scott Eyre. Well, we have Scott Eyre for another year at a reasonable 2 million a year. So we have one down and a few more to go.

Flyers Not So High Flying

Another game down and the Flyers are literally on their backsides. Having started the seaon on a losing streak, the Flyers came back with a solid winning streak even while play questionable defense. Well the losing is back considering last nights lackluster performance against Ottawa. Here is my take on what is wrong with our team on ice:

Well, the Phillies went with the safe pick on their next GM. I can't say I'm surprised with their pick of Amaro. He is afterall "one of them". Having served in multiple capacities since his days as a batboy. It is this familiarity that has me most concerned. Will he step up and push for something when the ownership pushes back? Does he have the ability to convince them something is the right thing to do? When Gillick came to town, it was a breath of fresh air in that someone from the outside finally can come in here and get rid of some of the inbreed ways of thinking. In doing so, Gillick changed the organization in ways we may never know but got them to see that this team can be winners if the right money is spent in the rig

Phillies Parade

It has been quite a long time since these eyes have seen anything as beautiful as the Phillies parade today. What a sight along the parade route. It was fitting for Pat to lead the charge since he's been with the team the longest. The rest of the parade provided a look into the eyes of the team. A team that played like champions throughout the ups and downs. I sure felt proud today to be a Philadelphian.

I was also fortunate enough to have tickets to CBP and hustled it down there in record time. It was then that it all hit me on how fortunate we all are to have such a team. Granted, over the years, some moves have been made that didn't work out but this team truly loves the fans. Having sat and listened to Charlie, Chase and the rest of the guys, you could tell they did it for all of us. Though Chase used a little profanity, to the joy of the crowd, it was the exclamation point on this year 'cause hell yeah we are the World 'fu*king' Champions. Damn straight and let no one forget it!

I'm now going to enjoy this day for another day or two and I'll then be in full Flyers mode as, hey, guess what? They won 4 straight after dropping the first few games in tough fashion.

Another championship anyone?

A Happy Day Indeed

I spent quite a few hours over my lifetime supporting my Philadelphia teams. Typically this is in the form of watching on TV but I've done my fair share of carnivals as well. I had yet to experienced the kind of intense desire to win or the relief that comes with winning a championship than what I did last night. For my beloved Philadelphia Phillies to go out and knock off a very good Tampa Bay Rays team and do so in front of the home crowd was a magical moment indeed. I can't recall the last time I jumped and screamed with the neighbors on my block and release all this pent up frustration. What a beautiful sight that pitch from Brad Lidge was last night.

DeSean, do you have any idea on how to score a touchdown? Not since Leon Lett have a seen such preemptive celebration turn sour. Luckily for you that your teamates picked you up and scored that touchdown.
