A Memorial Halladay

Wow, what a weekend! Not only some time off to spend with the family, cook up some burgers and hot dogs but also a very heavy sports schedule for all the fanatics.

So I'll start with the obvious. Roy Halladay and his perfect game.

The Phillies - A Quick Hit

So it appears the the old man has wrapped it up. Not Charlie and a tuna fish sandwich but our loveable local Jamie Moyer. I've got to hand it to him, he can pitch and has proven himself healthy. He certainly has what it takes to get major league hitters out and will make a solid 5th starter.

What was more important for the Phillies however, was Kyle Kendrick's near domination of the spring training circuit. The kid proved again that a little seasoning at triple-A last year was time well spent and he deserves a spot on the big club. His attitude of taking the "demotion" to the bullpen shows he's not only a team player but his respect for the game of baseball. Lesser men would have complained that they deserved the starting spot in today's ego driven major leagues. Kudos to you Kyle!

Phinally, Spring Training Is Upon Us:

So yeah, I took a hiatus from writing for a while. It's not like Philly sports was all that exciting since the Phillies' exit from the World Series. The 76ers still continue to bore even after the latest A.I. experiment. The Flyers are back to their "look like a contender to look like an also-ran to look like a contender" roller-coaster ride and the Eagles, well, lets just say, I'm tired of the "seems like we're close but reality slaps us in the face" approach each year.

So that brings me to the Phillies. The only team in this town that seems to have a legit shot at anything this year. Overall, I liked my chances so much, I bought more tickets when the single games went on sale. But enough about what I'm doing, here's my take on the 2010 Philadelphia Phillies:

The Eagles, The Sixers and Boredom

So the Eagles keep winning. Whoo Hoo! Well not so much. Actually it's the other teams giving the games away by not putting a pathetic Eagles team away early. This team could be so much better even

Pop-ups and Strikeouts, The highlights of World Series Game 3

Well, I have watched all the Phillies playoff games this year and although the bats have come alive, the hitting so far this World Series has been horrid short of Utley's performance in game 1 and Jayson Werth's performance in game 3.

Quick thoughts and other things

Well, the Phillies are back! For the first time in my life, I get to see my beloved Phillies in the World Series for a 2nd year in a row. A miracle? Perhaps but rather some sound investment in the players and the farm system. There were days in the past where I wondered if the Phillies would ever become at least consistent in something other than losing. It appears that is coming to fruition.

Pedro, Lee & Vick

What a week! We see Cliff Lee come in and make the Phillies a serious contender to repeat as World Series Champions. His 3-0 WL record and an astounding 1.13 ERA make the trade look like a steal. Couple that with a paltry 6 walks in 24 innings pitched, Cliff has established himself as the stopper on the staff. Now if Cole can become even more consistent, the 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation will be

Pedro At Last?

So tomorrow night is the debut of Pedro Martinez. It has been quite a long time since I've been this excited about a 37 year old pitcher. But having seen the likes of the pitching staff these past few days, bring it on! Jamie Moyer seems to have either lost his ability to pitch or the hitters are just tuned into him now that his turtle-speed pitches appear way too juicy. The time has come to

Phillies Relief

The Phillies went into spring training with a concern at 2nd base in Chase Utley's hip. Well, he's coming along well and likely to be in the opening day lineup. All was quiet until the staff ace, Cole Hamels, hit a little bump in the road with a sore elbow. Luckily, after today's MRI, Cole has an inflammation in his elbow. This is good news considering the alternatives but I think this allows the Phillies to take their time deciding who will take the 5th starter position.

So far this spring both Chan Ho Park and J.A. Happ have provided a stunning competition for the last spot in the rotation. This gives the Phillies some comfort in that if they need to sit Cole for a few games, they have two solid pitchers to handle his spot.

Hey, the Flyers are hanging in there. Trouble part is they just don't seem very consistent with their play and when it comes to really solid teams, they just aren't showing up. Having watched a few games lately, they Flyers are in need of better defense, (where is that kid Sbisa?), more consistent scoring from Briere & Gagne and hopefully someone like Mike Knuble or Jeff Carter to get hot. I'm ok with Marty Biron being the #1 goalie but he takes a few too many risks outside the crease in my opinion. With an approach like that, a better offensive team will slam home those rebounds. I don't see the Flyers making it out of the first round.

Finally, I've been asked to let everyone know that FrustratedPhillyFans.com is giving away 2 Phillies tickets to a game in August to the person who wins the site's NCAA tournament. So if you haven't signed up to play, now is the time. It's FREE, so make your picks!
