Last night’s 6-4 win, combined with the Mets shutout loss to St. Louis, has stunningly brought the Phillies into a tie for first with 3 games to play this weekend.
Say what you want about this team (and boy, have I said plenty) they have played hard every single night, many times overcoming AAA level pitching and hitting their way into contention. Playoffs or no playoffs, t ...

Last night’s disheartening 10-6 loss leaves the Phils tied for second in the Wild Card (Colorado), 1 game back of San Diego, and 2 games behind the Mets in the NL East. Any chance of winning the division was lost last night. Jaime Moyer again failed to avoid the big inning, allowing 3 first inning runs and immediately blowing the lead after the Phils came back (again) to take the lead in the 5th. Again, 6 runs weren’t nearly enough to win.

After taking a day to wallow in the Eagles 0-2 start, it is time to see where things need to get better. The first place I look is the receiving core. While QB Donovan McNabb deserves his share of the blame, Wide Receiver Kevin Curtis and Reggie Brown have been almost invisible in the first two games. Too many times on Monday McNabb stood in the pocket and watched as his receivers repeatedly failed to get open, mainly as a result of continued bump-and-run coverage. This needs to change. The coaches ...

The Eagles fell to 0-2 against the Redskins last night, and with Detroit and their high-powered offense coming to town on Sunday, could be staring 0-3 right in the face. The offense, which was assumed to be a strength this year, is struggling mightily. QB Donovan McNab, who is still shaking off the rust in his return from a knee injury, missed a few receivers last night and seemed to lack touch on his passes. Brian Westbrook and the running game were underutilized again; of course, it never seems like he’s ...

This morning’s Daily News has a picture of a kick returner “Wheel of Fortune.” How did we get here? How did this happen? The Eagles have always had a certain arrogance in their personnel moves, but not since the last game at the Vet, the NFC Championship game against Tampa Bay (with Joe Jurevicius was running amok past the area where Jeremiah Trotter should have been) has one been as costly as Sunday’s game against the Packers, when the Eagles took the field without a capable punt returner.

Most of my football predictions will not be based on stats or conventional wisdom, but on what I see and have seen as a football fan. So her are some random football predictions for this season:
This week, despite what most conservative analysts are predicting, the Eagles will roll over Green Bay, 38-17.

The Phillies squandered a 6 run lead in the last 2 innings Wednesday afternoon, and it is a loss that will be tough to come back from. Brett Myers and Tom Gordon were victims of bad bounces and a missed catch in RF, but a 6-run lead is a 6-run lead, and good, highly paid relievers are supposed to get these saves. After a 4-game sweep of the Mets last week, bringing them to 2 games back in the NL East, a 2-4 road trip has served to once again pull the rug out from under Phillies fans. Twice in the last week, 8 runs has not been good enough to win. You just cannot make the playoffs with pitching ...
