Myers proves his manhood again

Brett Myers had to be restrained from attacking an Inquirer beat reporter on Saturday night after Myers gave up two Home Runs and dismissed them as pop-ups. The reporter rightfully questioned his answer, which reeked of a bad excuse, and Myers lost his temper, calling him a retard. The reporter asked him to spell retard, and caveman Myers went ballistic. Myers, like all bullies, tried to embarrass an honest reporter, and then when he was out-witted, threatened to beat up said reporter.

This incident comes on the heels of last year’s domestic violence arrest, where Myers reportedly dragged his wife across the street by her hair. Myers is a rare scumbag on an otherwise likeable team. Someone needs to tell Myers he&rs ... Read More »

This week’s release of Jeremiah Trotter was not just another example of an aging player being forced to move on. It was more than that. It was a gutting of the heart and soul of the Eagles defense and locker room. The worst part of it all is probably the fact that it was the right move on the field. As a fan, I would love to see the Eagles win the Super Bowl for many reasons; but for me my favorite part of watching the Super Bowl is the end, when the winning team celebrates on the sidelines, grinning ear-to-ear knowing that all of the hard work they have put in, all the sacrifice, paid off with the accomplishment of the ultimate goal. The Eagles have a core of veterans that deserve that feeling, and Trotter’s release is proof that the time is short for many of our favorite Eagles.

The one nice thing about Trotter’s release is the way it was handled. Tro ... Read More »

The Phils dropped 2 out of 3 to the lowly Pirates this weekend, a development that could give fans the idea that the team is fading. The Pirates sent 12 hitters to the plate in the 7th inning, scoring 7 runs, all with 2 outs in yesterday’s 8-4 loss. The loss dropped them 5 games behind the NL East leading Mets, and 1 game behind San Diego for the Wild Card. Despite the lost weekend in Pittsburgh, the Phils are still in the thick of the race, and hopefully, in a week, the Phils will get Shane Victorino and Chase Utley back from the DL. No team in the race will make these kinds of additions for the rest of the year. The Phillies are no doubt very flawed, but so are all of the contenders in the NL. Once the full complement of bats returns, the Phillies can go back to outscoring opponents down the stretch.

Two weeks ago, when Chase Utley went down with a broken hand, it seemed like an elusive Phillies playoff berth would have to wait another year.  But this team has not only tread water during the DL stints of Utley, Shane Victorino, and Michael Bourn, it has gained ground.  Players who weren’t even on the roster a month ago are now contributing to victories.  Kyle Lohse gave the Phils another solid start, and despite leaving the game behind, was let off the hook when newest addition Russ Branyan hit a go-ahead 2 run HR in the 8th.  With the suddenly solid Phils bullp ... Aaron Rowand continued his brilliant season with another clutch HR in last night’s win over the Marlins. Rowand’s price continues to go up, a price that will probably leave him out of the financial plans of our cheap owners.

Last off-season, Gary Matthews, Jr. signed a 5-year contract for more than $10 million per. Eric Byrnes of the AZ Diamondbacks just got a 3-year extension for $30 million. This spells bad news for Phillies fans, who not only love Rowand’s all-out style of play, but his increasing offensive importance. When others failed to drive in runs behind Ryan Howard and Chase Utley early in the season, Rowand has stepped in a filled the void, making him very hard to replace. That makes him at least as valuable as Matthews, and Byrnes.

Phillies fans have seen enough of Adam Eaton, and it is time for him to go to the bullpen. Despite his 9-7 record, his ERA of 6.09 is worst among NL starters, and he hasn’t even kept the Phillies in the game in at least 6 weeks. The fact that he has 9 wins is a tribute to run support, not actual performance.

In April and May, he was at least giving the team innings and keeping the score manageable, but lately his most valuable contribution to the team has been with his bat. His bat, however, is not why the Phillies gave him a 3-year, $24 Million contract in the off season. Now that Pat Burrell is contributing, Eaton now holds the dubious distinction of "Biggest waste of money" on the team.

The Phillies don’t have many options to replace him, but that ... Read More »
